法、研究目的的不同，固體力學可以分為理論力學、材料力學、結構力學、彈性力學、闆殼力學、塑性力學、斷裂力學、機械振動、聲學、計算力學、有限元分析等等，流體力學包含流體靜力學、流體動力學等等。根據針對對象所建立的模型不同，力學也可以分為質點力學、剛體力學和連續介質力學。連續介質通常分為固體和流體，固體包括彈性體和塑性體。

力學可粗分為靜力學、運動學和動力學三部分，靜力學研究力的平衡或物體的靜止問題；運動學隻考慮物體怎樣運動，不討論它與所受力的關係；動力學討論物體運動和所受力的關係。
