在1920年，羅爾德3歲的時候，他7歲的姊姊艾絲翠得（Astrid）死於盲腸炎。大約一個月之後，他父親死於肺炎，時年57歲。他的母親雖然可以選擇迴到挪威與親戚一起生活，但她還是決定留在英國，因為羅爾德的父親生前一直十分希望他的兒女能在英國接受教育，他認為英國的教育是最好的。
