　　《葛傳椝英文書信序言選編》所收的文章來自《葛傳椝英文集（三）》，包括葛先生用英語撰寫的書信、序言等共27篇。每一篇文章都可以獨立閱讀，文後輔以注釋，便於理解和學習，深入淺齣，中學生即能讀懂。

作者簡介

　　葛傳椝（1906-1992），復旦大學教授，上世紀50年代復旦大學英語語言文學係“三巨頭”之一。幼時傢境清貧，初中輟學後，自學英語。1921年考入上海電報傳習所，翌年至崇明縣立中學任教。1925年起任上海商務印書館英語編輯，直至八一三中日淞滬戰爭爆發。任職其間發現很多英語單詞的中文詞意義相同，而英語的習慣錶述卻差異很大，即以6年時間編寫《英語習慣用法詞典》，於1942年齣版，是為中國人編寫的第一部英語慣用法詞典。在查閱《簡明牛津詞典》（TheConciseOxfordDictionaryofCurrentEnglish）時，發現其中不少錯誤，即緻信詞典主編英人福勒(H。W。Fowler)，為福勒所欽佩。之後，為中華書局、競文書局編寫英語讀本。1945年起任教於上海光華大學。中華人民共和國成立後，接上級教育主管單位命令，1951年光華大學與大夏大學閤並成立華東師範大學，繼續在此執教至1954年，繼而調往復旦大學外文係任教，直至1986年退休。1992年7月在上海逝世。著有久負盛名的《英漢四用詞典》、《新英漢詞典》（主要編纂者之一），以及《英語慣用法詞典》、《英語寫作》，被學界譽為一代宗師，為中國英語教育界先驅之一。

　　LETTER TO MR H. W. FOWLER1
　　Shanghai, January 9, 1934
　　Dear Sir,
　　January 6 was a red-letter day2 with me; for it was on that day that I received your letter. Whenever I hear my English praised, I feel a sort of pride. I cannot tell you how I prize an encouraging autograph letter3 from a man of your authority and reputation.
　　As I said in my previous letter, I have for years past devoted myself to the study of English. I am fool enough often to say to myself 4 that I am born to study English and to help my compatriots5 to study it. I work in an office simply because I have to work to live and to support my family. I wish I could6 have enough time every day to write books on and in English7 for Chinese students of the language.
　　I am writing chiefly to ask you to recommend some books of the Modern English Usage or the King’s English kind.
　　I have read the works of Dr Otto Jespersen8 and Mr Henry Sweet9 and many grammars10 and books on rhetoric11 by American authors. (By the way, I do not know of any rhetoric book written by an Englishman, and wonder whether there is any such.) But I am sorry to find that most of the so-called17 “advanced”12 grammars by American authors are not advanced enough for me.
　　I am very sorry that neither are you likely ever to comeover to China nor can I visit England, I simply do not know whether I can ever find a man who can advise me in my studies. Professors of English are as plentiful as blackberries13 here in China, both Chinese and foreigners. But I doubt whether many of them care so much as14 to open books like The Modern English Usage and The King’s English.
　　You mentioned “pressure of work”15 in your letter. You are busy writing a new book? Will you please let me know what it is and when it may be out16? I should also be interested to know where Dr Jespersen is, and whether Mr J. C. Nesfield17 is still living.
　　Need I apologize for the trouble I am giving you? I flatter myself18 that it will give you much pleasure to hear from19 one of the few Chinese, if not20 the only Chinese, who do read your books with the care they deserve.
