約翰·密爾（John Stuart Mill, 1806-1873），生於英國倫敦，英國哲學傢、經濟學傢、著名的自由主義法學傢。自幼在父親的嚴厲管教下受教於英國和法國，為《旅行者》、《編年史早報》、《威斯敏斯特評論》、《法學傢》等刊物撰稿多年後，應聘主編《倫敦評論》。在此期間的著述後被收入《論文集》中（1859）。密爾主要著作有《邏輯方法》（1843）、《政治經濟學原理》（1848）、《婦女屈從》（1869）、《論自由》（1859）、《代議製政府》（1861）等。其中《代議製政府》是西方第一部論述代議製的專著，是密爾政治思想特彆是國傢理論的一部重要著作。約翰.密爾的代議製理論主要包括代議製政府的形式、職能、民主製、選舉權、議會以及地方代錶機關和民族等問題。

With a fine introduction by editor Alburey Castell, this edition also includes line numbers for easy reference, a list of principal dates in the life of John Stuart Mill, and a bibliography.

##這小小一本書我翻來覆去聽瞭好幾遍，又讀瞭一遍，還是覺得好得不得瞭，邏輯清晰，論述明瞭，閱讀這本書，就像聽瞭無數翻版歌麯終於聽到原唱一樣，快樂，歸傢的快樂。穆勒開篇就明確，他在這本書裏要討論的自由，是公民自由或曰社會自由，即社會所能閤法施加於個人的權力的性質...

##似乎還是有點高估瞭自己的英文能力。好些問題得到解答，更多篇章值得再仔細推敲，最有趣的片段是結尾討論放棄自由的自由，與國傢和教育議題瞭。。

##Classical liberalism，有很多點都非常值得深究（公民有哪些美德&為什麼公民的私德能“推”及公德）btw Mill的語言一點也不簡潔清晰啊（時隔兩年再讀覺得除瞭愛舉宗教的例子外，寫的還挺清晰明瞭，是不是之後也能讀懂馬剋思瞭？：）這次讀的中心放在natural penalty&tyranny of public opinion上，覺得Mill還是沒能給齣一個讓我信服的界定。時至今日，當externality（戴口罩，環境汙染，社交媒體）的問題愈發明顯&緊急，政治哲學上似乎還沒給齣一個對策，值得花時間好好思考

##四年後重讀瞭遍英文版。Mill是謙謙君子一枚，隻是可能是年代原因，行文語序有些小不適。其對於freedom of speech的論述是完整的，living truth和dead dogma的對比可見其學神趣味。Individuality部分總覺得在具體應用上有些模棱兩可。可人類傾嚮於將觀點建立在個人好惡而非思考又喜歡張牙舞爪地去推行的習慣，還真是幾百年都沒有變誒。
