By Tara Westover. Random House; 385 pages; $28. Hutchinson; [pounds sterling]14.99
A riveting memoir of a brutal upbringing. The author grew up in a normally opaque environment: a Mormon survivalist household in Idaho, where she endured abuse and received no education. Despite not setting foot in a classroom until she was 17, she made it to university and wound up with a PhD from Cambridge.
##What an intense book to my surprise. Setting aside the Homeless-to-Harvard-alike buzz, it is the author's personal struggle to reshape her history and the history around her that makes the book dynamic.
There is always something holding us back.

评分##Everything I had worked for, all my years of study, had been to purchase for myself this one privilege: to see and experience more truths than those given to me by my father, and to use those truths to construct my own mind.
