作者简介

Herman Melville, though not appreciated in his own time, is now regarded as one of America's greatest novelists. Much of the material for his novels was drawn from his own experience as a seaman. He wrote his masterpiece Moby Dick in 1851and died in1891. Andrew Delbanco is Professor of English & Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Tom Quirk is Professor of English at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

在某种意义上，米沃什的这本《被禁锢的头脑》，比乔治•奥威尔的《一九八四》更加伟大和富有意义。奥威尔的那本是预言幻想小说，重在描写人们在巨大的外部压力及恐惧之下，如何思想变形，完成了从属和归顺的过程。身在英国的奥威尔，并没有亲身经历俄式极权主义，没有看见它是如何从一个社会内部成长出来。实际上任何被称为“怪胎”的东西，都不可能仅仅是外来的，“被植入”的，而是有其自身深刻的历史、文化及人性的根源。米沃什写在1951年的这本，重心放在了当时人们如何从自身的处境、困厄及个人野心出发，自觉并入强势力量，最终变成了压力的一部分。书中所见所闻，为作者本人亲身经历。 　　 切斯瓦夫•米沃什（1911—2004），波兰诗人。1980年获诺贝尔文学奖时，他在美国伯克利大学斯拉夫语系教书，在波兰故乡他的作品不能出版，不能在课堂上被提起，只能以地下的方式加以流传。曾经有人运用气球，将这本《被禁锢的头脑》从美国降落在他母语的土地和山峦上。他被隔离的原因在于开始写作这本书的早些时候，他从波兰驻法国使馆文化参赞的位置上出走。 　　 巴黎很少有人理解和接受他。时值冷战初期，巴黎的知识分子如萨特、波伏娃正陷入与斯大林主义的调情，这书被视为“美帝国主义的宣传品”。巴黎的波兰侨民不相信“新信仰”的建立不是出于恐惧和投机，而是由于有人真心相信了某些“真理”，指责他在为共产主义“做宣传”。一位巴黎的心理医生认为，一个人已经在现有体制中拥有体面位置，居然还要流亡他乡，一定是疯了。在极度困难的情况下，给予他支持的人中有两个光辉的名字：法国作家加缪和德国哲学家雅斯贝尔斯，后者为他这本《被禁锢的头脑》德文版写了序言。 　　他本人之倔还在于尽管饥寒交迫，但是他不拿自己的故事和身份去赚钱。他是唯一一个不给“自由欧洲”写稿的流亡作家。很多年内他为自己出走的选择，感到“罪咎”和“羞耻”，这种感觉伴随了他一生，他认为那除了是一个灾难，而不会是别的。1960年他去了美国，一待三十年，一边教书，一边坚持波兰语写作。“忠实的母语啊/我一直在侍奉你。//每天晚上，我总在你面前摆下你各种颜色的小碗……命运铺开一面红地毯/在一出道德剧的罪人面前”。（《我忠实的母语》，切斯瓦夫•米沃什：《拆散的笔记簿》，绿原译，漓江出版社，1989年，页131—132。） 　　 冰冻解除之后，米沃什于90年代初回到波兰，病逝于克拉科夫。他的诗歌与其他散文作品在中国一直有译本出版。80年代末，老诗人绿原译出了米沃什诗选《拆散的笔记簿》，这本诗选成为许多中国诗人的最爱。近些年，《米沃什诗选》、《米沃什词典》、《诗的见证》陆续问世。这本《被禁锢的头脑》，在人们翘首以盼很久之后，终于有中文版面世。 　　 “被禁锢的”一词在波兰文里，有“使信服”、“使信任”以及“被奴役”的意思。如果存在奴役，它也并不仅仅是强迫的，而是有着心甘情愿的意味。新信仰也许带着迷人的微笑，令人折服而不仅是压迫，这使得这本书拥有了极为丰富的阐述空间。 　　这本书也会让年轻的中国读者对四五十年代的那批人们，有一个平行的了解。 　　 　　 二 　　 　　 米沃什来自立陶宛一个贵族家庭，他出生的年代，立陶宛属于波兰。他的家族属于说波兰语的上层社会。当时的立陶宛首都维尔诺，是一个十分国际化的城市。米沃什有一位堂兄，为立陶宛驻法国外交官员，用法语写诗。米沃什与他的年轻同伴，也有一个先锋诗歌的小圈子，他后来回忆道：那时候一个维尔诺的年轻诗人头脑中所想的问题，与一个法国年轻诗人没有什么分别。在当时国际主义思潮的影响下，青年米沃什为自己的富有家庭感到羞惭。 　　 如此美丽的一个地方，
