何为开放社会？卡尔•波普尔认为“它是以言论自由与多元主义为前提的”“神秘的或部落的集体主义的社会也可以被称为封闭社会；而每个人都面临个人决定的社会则被称为开放社会。”在波普尔看来，封闭社会是个国家有机体，不存在成员地位的竞争，等级制度是神圣不可侵犯的。“不存在大脑变大腿”；开放社会则存在阶级斗争。
