哈耶剋早期以研究貨幣和經濟周期理論成名。提齣貨幣投資過度理論。他認為經濟周期的根源在於信貸變動引起的投資變動。銀行信貸的擴大刺激瞭投資，一旦銀行停止信貸擴張，經濟就會由於缺乏資本而爆發危機。他相信資本主義經濟本身有一種自行趨於穩定的機能，反對國傢對於經濟生活的乾預。他把70年代資本主義滯脹的齣現歸罪於凱恩斯主義的理論和政策。哈耶剋一直反對社會主義，反對計劃經濟，認為社會目標是個人目標的總和，社會目標不能抑製個人目標。而社會主義貶低人的個人目標，而遵從於社會的目標，限製瞭利己的動力。計劃經濟中的集中決策沒有市場經濟中的分散決策靈活，所以社會主義不可能有高效率 ；而且社會主義違背人性 ，計劃經濟導緻政府集權，是“通嚮奴役的道路”。他還反對西歐社會民主黨和英國工黨的社會改良措施。他的自由主義思想在西方國傢學術界有重要影響。1974年他與瑞典經濟學傢繆達爾共同獲得諾貝爾經濟學奬 。著有 《貨幣理論和經濟周期理論》、《物價與生産》、《資本純理論》、《通嚮奴役的道路》、《法律、立法與自由》、《貨幣的非國傢化：共存貨幣理論與實踐的分析》等。
