Among their friends, literary lights, musicians and artists such as Harry Smith, Bobby Neuwirth, Allen Ginsberg, Sandy Daley, Sam Shepherd, William Burroughs, etc. It was a heightened time politically and culturally; the art and music worlds exploding and colliding. In the midst of all this two kids made a pact to always care for one another. Scrappy, romantic, committed to making art, they prodded and provided each other with faith and confidence during the hungry years--the days of cous-cous and lettuce soup.

Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. Beautifully written, this is a profound portrait of two young artists, often hungry, sated only by art and experience. And an unforgettable portrait of New York, her rich and poor, hustlers and hellions, those who made it and those whose memory lingers near.

作者简介

Patti Smith is a writer, artist and performer. She has recorded ten albums and written five books, and her artwork has been exhibited worldwide. In 2005 she received the Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the highest grade awarded by the French Republic to eminent artists and writers who have contributed significantly to furthering the arts throughout the world. She lives in New York City.

这大概是我写的最短的一篇译后记。好的文字总是令人失语，伟大的作品更是令人心存敬畏，不敢多加评论。精彩如[SM]这样的小说，我辈只有如痴如醉地倾心捧读。 　　 最后一切真相大白，道布斯爵士给了“白茫茫一片大地真干净”的背景，平静优雅的语言，如我所料的结局，却有着震撼人心的力量。我一边把英文变成中文，一边无声地流下眼泪。这听起来也许很矫情，但这真是破天荒头一遭。翻译感人的爱情故事，我固然感动泫然，却并未浑身发抖不能自持；翻译与我的经历有切身关联的纪实作品，我固然激情满怀，却并未手脚冰凉震撼不已。但这本小说做到了。从头到尾，我见证了一个人，或一群人，他们形形色色，天壤之别，却因为对权力的共同追逐，进入无穷无尽的漩涡，或挣扎，或放任，最终要么出人头地享受风光无限，要么惨不忍睹遭受灭顶之灾。 　　 看上去弗朗西斯•厄克特似乎是唯一笑到最后的成功者，但我以一个小女子的浅薄试图去窥探他的内心，难道站在硕大的唐宁街首相办公室，独自一人看着窗外的景色，他不会痛苦，不会孤独？也许就像他自己所说的，“这就是政坛。”一路走来，他收获的是权力与掌声，丢失的呢？人性、情感、友谊与道德和良心。夜深人静时，他能安然入眠吗？回想过去时，他能坦然无畏吗？不知书中的弗朗西斯听到这番所谓的“陈词滥调”，是不是会微微一笑，用那双凛冽而深邃的蓝眼睛看着我，一字一句地说：“你可以这么说，但我不可能发表任何评论。” 　　诚然，一开始是因为对热播美剧[SM]和男主演凯文•史派西的崇拜，促使我接下这本书的翻译任务。甚至一开始还觉得书过于严肃，没那么吸引人。但后来我被作者优雅沉着而又引人入胜的表达紧紧抓住，到最终读完和译完这本书，有两点值得庆幸。 　　 一是这本书写于上个世纪八九十年代交替之时，所以，书中没有美剧里为了吸引观众眼球，而增添的那么多花里胡哨的人物和节外生枝的情节，一切都集中于弗朗西斯和几个主要角色身上，干脆利落，紧凑得没有半点多余的情节。整本书一气呵成，摄人心魄，令读者手不释卷。 　　 二是原著是以英国政坛为背景，而且作者是真正在政坛摸爬滚打过的人。所以书中的权力倾轧和政治斗争比美剧更真实，更直接，更敏锐，更残酷。对我来说，这本书的翻译过程，也是更深入了解英国政体，了解其中权力纠葛的学习过程。 　　 当然，从对“乌七八糟的英国政坛”所知寥寥到查阅资料，搜寻网络，翻译完这本书，加之自己水平有限，其中难免有错误和疏漏，还希望读者多多指正。在此也感谢编辑对我的帮助和鼓励，以及家人和朋友对我的支持。谢谢你们，给我温暖美好的爱，让我勇敢前行。 　　就像作者说的，请沉浸其中，好好享受。你会像我一样被震撼得哑口无言吗？这个嘛，你怎么说都行，“但我不可能发表任何评论”。

　　陈虻去世，是柴静写书的最大动机，她说，陈虻死了，没有什么能大过死亡，想到这里也就踏实了。采访短道速滑队教练李琰的时候，柴静说，她特别理解李琰，仿佛看到陈虻，教练的责任就是训练你，没有义务对你好。她接着说，所以陈虻一直在，时不时就会出现在她的采访瞬间。在这本书里，她从陈虻起笔，以陈虻落笔，最后一篇名为《陈虻不死》。追忆陈虻，是为了时时提醒自己，不管走得多远，都不能忘了为何出发。
