　　年老的李尔王想要退位，希望把国土分给他的三个女儿。在分封的时候，他让每个女儿都说说对他的爱戴，以她们对他爱戴的程度给她们分配国土。大女儿高纳里尔和二女儿里根竭尽全力的赞美国王，只有小女儿考狄利娅因表达了自己朴实而真挚的感情被李尔驱逐，并因为她的诚实得到了法国国王的欢心，去法国做了王后。在把国土分给两个女儿之后，李尔王的两个女儿经过商量以后决定让李尔撤掉他当初的100个随从，不然就不让李尔住在她们的宫廷。被两女儿赶出家门悲痛的李尔与他的随从格罗斯特在风雨中碰到了可怜的汤姆，也就是格罗斯特中了埃德蒙诡计而下令驱逐的儿子埃德加。李尔认为这是自己误解小女儿，理应受到两个女儿的惩罚。后来与格罗斯特和可怜的汤姆分开以后，就在他自怨自艾的时候，来了一个圣徒安慰他。李尔对圣徒说了自己对考狄利娅犯下的错误，并懊悔的表达了自己的绝望：他觉得考狄利娅再不会原谅他了。但圣徒却说，考狄利娅一直爱着她的父亲。 　　原来，这个圣徒就是考狄利娅。她在法国得知李尔的困境之后，立刻组织了一支军队，秘密在英国登陆，因为放心不下李尔，所以特地在开战前，来探望李尔。与此同时，高纳里尔与里根都爱上了为了得到王位陷害父亲与哥哥的埃德蒙。最终，小女儿的军队大败，她和李尔都被抓起来了，爱德蒙发布秘密处以他们死刑的命令，直到他死前才揭露这个密令，但已太晚，虽然李尔杀死了想暗杀小女儿的杀手，她还是死了。埃德加找到了埃德蒙并且与他决斗，最后埃德加杀死了埃德蒙。而在李尔抱着她去寻找大伙时，高纳里尔与里根也已经死去。李尔过于悲伤，最后崩溃而死。

作者简介

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564, and his birth is traditionally celebrated on April 23. The facts of his life, known from surviving documents, are sparse. He was one of eight children born to John Shakespeare, a merchant of some standing in his community. William probably went to the King's New School in Stratford, but he had no university education. In November 1582, at the age of eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior, who was pregnant with their first child, Susanna. She was born on May 26, 1583. Twins, a boy, Hamnet ( who would die at age eleven), and a girl, Judith, were born in 1585. By 1592 Shakespeare had gone to London working as an actor and already known as a playwright. A rival dramatist, Robert Greene, referred to him as "an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers." Shakespeare became a principal shareholder and playwright of the successful acting troupe, the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later under James I, called the King' s Men). In 1599 the Lord Chamberlain's Men built and occupied the Globe Theater in Southwark near the Thames River. Here many of Shakespeare's plays were performed by the most famous actors of his time, including Richard Burbage, Will Kempe, and Robert Armin. In addition to his 37 plays, Shakespeare had a hand in others, including Sir Thomas More and The Two Noble Kinsmen, and he wrote poems, including Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. His 154 sonnets were published, probably without his authorization, in 1609. In 1611 or 1612 he gave up his lodgings in London and devoted more and more time to retirement in Stratford, though he continued writing such plays as The Tempest and Henry VII until about 1613. He died on April 23 1616, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford. No collected edition of his plays was published during his life-time, but in 1623 two members of his acting company, John Heminges and Henry Condell, put together the great collection now called the First Folio.
