　　平克试图揭示出隐藏在各种自然语言背后的共有的语法结构，他这部分工作主要在书中的第四章“语言如何运作”中完成。他的论证策略可以归结如下：首先，他从语言学上一个被普遍承认的原则谈起，即“语言可以用有限的中介去做无限的应用”（make infinite use of finite media），这个规则最早由语言学家洪特提出。平克认为，这表明我们可以用一套规则去翻译字序和思维之间的关系，而这套规则是“生成语法”（generative grammar）。通过了解生成语法，我们就可以知道人是如何造出句子的。而其中一个生成语法模型被称为“字串模型”（word-chain model）。平克指出了字串模型的若干个困难，重新提出了树状模型。如果树状模型成立，则X-bar理论成立，继而可以得出所有语言都具有X-bar理论所描述的语法结构。当然，前提是生成语法首先要成立。
