　　杜德美奉康熙帝之命繪製大清國地圖，因此得以親眼見到人參的生長環境。一七〇九年七月底，杜德美的繪製隊伍到達距離朝鮮邊境僅四法裏遠的一個村子，住在那裏的韃靼人在鄰近的山林中挖瞭四株完整的人參，放在籃子裏給杜德美。在信中，杜德美還畫下瞭他所收到的人參圖譜。通過這些信件往來，總巡閱使可能首次見到人參的圖像及其說明。遺憾的是，現今版本的書簡集中沒有將圖譜收入。
　　當時中國許多名醫宣稱，人參是治療身心過度勞纍引起的衰竭癥的靈丹，它不僅能化痰，治愈肺虛及胸膜炎，增進食欲，還能驅散氣鬱、大補元氣。杜德美認為，如果人參不能産生經久不衰的效應，就無法想象漢人和滿人會如此重視它。甚至有些健康人為瞭更加強壯，也常服用人參。他相信精通製藥的歐洲人若能有足夠的人參進行必要的試驗，通過化學方法測試其特性，並根據病情，利用人參適當地對癥下藥，那麼，人參在他們手裏將成為上等良藥。
　　杜德美非常相信人參的療效：活血化瘀、增加熱量、幫助消化、滋補強身。他對總巡閱史說明瞭自己服用人參的經驗：他替自己量脈搏，然後服用半枝未曾加工的生人參，一小時候，他感覺脈搏跳得比以前還要有力，胃口隨之大開，渾身充滿活力。當時他並未完全相信那次實驗，認為這種變化或許是那天休息得好的緣故。四天之後，杜德美因工作關係，疲倦得幾乎要從馬背上摔下，同隊一位中國官員見狀就給他一枝人參，他服用瞭半枝，一小時後就不再感到虛弱瞭。從那時起，他發現每次服用都有相同的效果。
　　除瞭生食人參，杜德美亦如滿人一樣，把人參葉代替茶葉泡著喝。杜德美建議身體健康的人和僅為防病或偶患微恙的人，每次用量彆超過一錢，且不用每天服用。燒煮方法是，將人參切成小片放在上過釉的土罐中，再倒入四分之一升的水，蓋緊罐子，以溫火燜煮，等放入的水剩下一罐底時，再放入一點糖並立即服用。然後將殘渣倒入同樣多的水中，以同樣方法燒煮，如此可以再次提取根部殘留的養分，兩份汁液則早晚各服一次。

這一期是宮廷醫學專輯，很值得收藏。首先映入眼簾的是藏傳佛教瑜伽修煉圖，大小計20幅，彩繪，係故宮博物院珍藏，清帝禦用，海內孤本。南開大學餘新忠先生撰寫的《從宮廷到社會：國傢醫療衛生的近代演變》，詳細的記述瞭1821年夏在中國大範圍爆發的真性霍亂，以及清政府的應對。文中談到：“錶麵上看，國傢的醫療衛生機構頗為完善，但實際上，盡管不同的時代國傢對醫療事業的重視程度不同，但整體上，這些機構的服務對象基本都是宮廷和官員，而地方醫學，由於職位很少，且品級寒微，能為地方官府服務已屬不易，更遑論服務社會瞭。”可謂一針見血地指齣封建帝王時代醫療機構的緻命弊端。再如其評述太醫院的職能也是極其有限。所以不可過高估計曆代宮廷醫學的社會貢獻。而人們齣於對宮廷的神秘感，往往對宮廷的醫學，乃至飲食、保健、美容等的評價和宣傳，常常是多有附會，過度放大瞭的。這一期雜誌裏，我覺得最吸引人的是，大量的精美的難得一見的圖，片。比如齣自河北蔚縣關帝廟壁畫《百工圖》中的《啞醫堂》，故宮博物院珍藏的耀州窯青釉藥王像，“永和宮藥房匾”（據這方匾我們可以明確知曉“藥房”這一名稱），“壽康宮藥房”字樣的木雕版，光緒用同仁堂藥味底簿，珍妃外用醫方真跡，乾隆時琺琅采藥畫盤，四聯藥瓶，盛貯六味地黃丸、硃砂安神丸、活絡膏的藥罐，乃至日本明治時期的《各國藥品名集鑒》等等，都令人大開眼界。在目前已齣版的各傢醫學史和醫學史圖冊，和這一期雜誌所附圖片相比，都不免黯然失色。

寜壽宮建築群的正麵入口是皇極門，門前有一橫嚮的庭院，左右兩邊是欽禧門和錫慶門，南麵布一影壁正對皇極門，組成門前的廣埸。皇極門用琉璃在牆外做成三間七樓加垂蓮柱的三座門形式，三個門洞上都有琉璃瓦齣簷，簷下有鬥栱、橫梁，梁上有琉璃貼成的鏇子彩畫，門上有石製須彌座，門前放置水缸四隻，整座大門華而莊嚴。在皇極門的南麵立有一座琉璃照壁，照壁上有龍九條，俗稱為九龍壁。
