　　杜德美奉康熙帝之命绘制大清国地图，因此得以亲眼见到人参的生长环境。一七〇九年七月底，杜德美的绘制队伍到达距离朝鲜边境仅四法里远的一个村子，住在那里的鞑靼人在邻近的山林中挖了四株完整的人参，放在篮子里给杜德美。在信中，杜德美还画下了他所收到的人参图谱。通过这些信件往来，总巡阅使可能首次见到人参的图像及其说明。遗憾的是，现今版本的书简集中没有将图谱收入。
　　当时中国许多名医宣称，人参是治疗身心过度劳累引起的衰竭症的灵丹，它不仅能化痰，治愈肺虚及胸膜炎，增进食欲，还能驱散气郁、大补元气。杜德美认为，如果人参不能产生经久不衰的效应，就无法想象汉人和满人会如此重视它。甚至有些健康人为了更加强壮，也常服用人参。他相信精通制药的欧洲人若能有足够的人参进行必要的试验，通过化学方法测试其特性，并根据病情，利用人参适当地对症下药，那么，人参在他们手里将成为上等良药。
　　杜德美非常相信人参的疗效：活血化瘀、增加热量、帮助消化、滋补强身。他对总巡阅史说明了自己服用人参的经验：他替自己量脉搏，然后服用半枝未曾加工的生人参，一小时候，他感觉脉搏跳得比以前还要有力，胃口随之大开，浑身充满活力。当时他并未完全相信那次实验，认为这种变化或许是那天休息得好的缘故。四天之后，杜德美因工作关系，疲倦得几乎要从马背上摔下，同队一位中国官员见状就给他一枝人参，他服用了半枝，一小时后就不再感到虚弱了。从那时起，他发现每次服用都有相同的效果。
　　除了生食人参，杜德美亦如满人一样，把人参叶代替茶叶泡着喝。杜德美建议身体健康的人和仅为防病或偶患微恙的人，每次用量别超过一钱，且不用每天服用。烧煮方法是，将人参切成小片放在上过釉的土罐中，再倒入四分之一升的水，盖紧罐子，以温火焖煮，等放入的水剩下一罐底时，再放入一点糖并立即服用。然后将残渣倒入同样多的水中，以同样方法烧煮，如此可以再次提取根部残留的养分，两份汁液则早晚各服一次。

坤宁宫在乾清宫的北面，也是面阔九开间，重檐庑殿顶的大殿。它在明朝和清朝初期一直是皇后居住的正宫。清顺冶时，按满族的风俗习惯，对坤宁宫进行了改造，主要是把宫内分为东西两部分。在西面部分，沿著墙添置了环形大炕，室内安置了大锅。在坤宁宫的东面部分则建成为皇帝结婚的洞房，入口改在东面，宫内有双喜的宫灯，红底金色双喜的影壁，靠北墙有龙凤喜床，床前挂著绣有百子图的五彩纱幔。
