我把1933到1938年这五年恋爱时期，概括为甜甜蜜蜜的五年，在甜甜蜜蜜之中掺入一些酸味，也许就更显得甜蜜了吧。在我这方面虽然没有使邓懿感到疑虑的事情，但遇到过一些人为我提亲说媒。初入燕京时，我的姨母就曾想把我舅父的女儿说合给我。当时不懂什么近亲不婚的道理，但认为婚姻大事应当由自己选择，所以婉言谢绝了。在辅仁时，柯燕龄先生也曾想把湖北藏书家徐行可先生的女儿给我，我也谢绝了。还在燕京国文专修班的时候，容庚先生曾想把他的得意弟子、一位比我高一班的女生介绍给我，先从侧面了解她的想法。这位女生表示，她将来非博士不嫁。后来她果然嫁给金陵大学的一位教授刘博士了。此事是多年以后朋友讲给我听，我才知道的。可是，周一良以后不也成为博士了吗？父亲对我的教育是非常保守的，可是在婚姻方面他却向来不加干涉，这样就省去了很多矛盾。
恋人之间不管如何相爱，总不免会有一些摩擦和误会。有一天晚上，我和邓懿在二院女生宿舍门口，因为有什么事情存在误会，没有能够澄清，可已经到了关门的时间，只好分手了。我那时忽然想起黄仲则的两句诗：“如此星辰非昨夜，为谁风露立中宵。”于是就想试一试“风露立中宵”的滋味，在二院关门熄灯以后，仍在门口独自徘徊不去。后来校卫队来巡逻，觉得我可疑，经过一番盘问以后，就把我带回男生宿舍去了。
