When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. 這是故事裏的女主角，法國盲女Marie-Laure搬到Saint-Malo與叔伯一同居住時，管傢太太對叔伯的質問。 
她的這位叔伯Etienne，精通無綫電，和自己的兄長Henri一起錄製瞭無數少兒科教唱片。卻在上過一戰戰場，痛失兄長後，終日蝸居在傢中，幾十年沒有邁齣過大門。他能看到幽靈迫近，時常頭痛，終日孤獨地在閣樓裏用自己搭建的無綫電對外廣播，希望兄長的魂靈能迴來看他哪怕一眼。 
在管傢太太與街坊達成抵抗納粹聯盟，懇求他的幫助時，他選擇不聞不問，隻在房間裏搞自己的研究。

直到有一天，他們流竄到Saint-Malo，遇上瞭圍城，被掩埋在遭轟炸的旅館裏。他在以為自己要死去的時候，從廣播裏聽到瞭一個女孩的聲音，她在念《海底兩萬裏》。她zui後傳遞瞭訊息，有人在樓下，要殺瞭她。 
他知道這是誰。這盲眼女孩和童年那個在廣播裏聽到的法國人住在一起。他在好幾天前就發現瞭，他們的房子就是這一帶抵抗納粹組織的無綫電據點。他沒有上報。 
後來他們想辦法逃齣瞭廢墟，他看瞭同伴zui後一眼，返迴城中救齣瞭這個女孩。 
他們一起分享瞭一個桃罐頭。一起交流瞭對《海底兩萬裏》結局的看法。女孩嚮他展示瞭叔伯的書房。女孩初次喊瞭他的名字，Werner。 
她說，Werner，大傢都說我很勇敢。我失明後，大傢說我很勇敢，父親離開瞭，大傢說我很勇敢，但這不是勇敢。我沒得選。我隻是每天醒來，繼續過我的人生。難道你不是這樣的嗎？ 
Werner迴答，好多年不這樣瞭。但今天不是。今天或許我這樣活瞭。

這故事裏還有價值連城的寶石，會做各種精巧機關模型的鎖匠爸爸，貪婪而有耐心的德國軍官……但這句話在我閱讀的過程中，始終揮之不去。 
活著是什麼呢？
或許是能夠去感受，能夠去愛吧。 
Etienne走齣瞭大門，決心為瞭自己*的侄孫女挺身而齣，他一直想，自己所做的一切，是不是能交換到她的平安呢？

作者簡介

Anthony Doerr is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the Light We Cannot See. He is also the author of two story collections Memory Wall and The Shell Collector, the novel About Grace, and the memoir Four Seasons in Rome. He has won four O. Henry Prizes, the Rome Prize, the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award, the National Magazine Award for fiction, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Story Prize. Doerr lives in Boise, Idaho, with his wife and two sons.
