　　　　吴藕汀先生自幼家道殷实，过着左琴右书的生活，但成年之后，太半人生处动荡之世，个人命运便如一叶处江流之中。即便如此，先生仍能保持“自由之思想，人格之独立”，这于生者而言，是一笔巨大的精神财富。《孤灯夜话》是吴藕汀先生的又一本随笔集。由于时代的原因，先生的大部分文字都是写在烟盒纸上，或小学生的方格本上，字体大小不一，他人难以辨认，整理这些文字的繁重任务，大部分由其哲嗣吴小汀先生承担。小汀先生说：“先父写这些文章的时候曾表示，就这样随意地写，想到哪里，就写到哪里。”为尊重藕公的想法，保持作品原貌，编辑只根据文字量的多少简单分了九卷，修正了一些整理稿中明显的错讹文字，通过查询相关资料补充了一些整理稿中缺失的文字。《夜话》内容涉及金石书画、版本考据、填词赋诗、种药养虫、人物故实、京昆弹词、社会变迁，可谓琳琅满目。文字处处见性情，像日记，又像时评。面对这样一位知识渊博又有真知灼见的文化老人，就如同坐拥一座格调不俗、藏品丰富的图书馆，我们能做的，也许就是打开这本书，安安静静地读下去。
