猫头鹰一旦判断出猎物的方位，便迅速出击。猫头鹰的羽毛非常柔软，翅膀羽毛上有天鹅绒般密生的羽绒，因而猫头鹰飞行时产生的声波频率小于1千赫，而一般哺乳动物耳朵是感觉不到那么低的频率的。这样无声的出击使猫头鹰的进攻更有“闪电战”的效果。据研究，猫头鹰在扑击猎物时，它的听觉仍起定位作用。它能根据猎物移动时产生的响动，不断调整扑击方向，最后出爪，一举奏效。

看法的原因可能是由于猫头鹰的长相古怪，两眼又大又圆，炯炯发光，使人感到惊恐；两耳直立，好像神话中的双角妖怪，使得古人多用“鸱目虎吻”来形容凶暴之貌；猫头鹰在黑夜中的叫声像鬼魂一样阴森凄凉，使人更觉恐怖，古时称它为“恶声鸟”，《说苑·鸣枭东徙》中有“枭与鸠遇，曰：我将徙，西方皆恶我声。……”的寓言故事。此外，猫头鹰昼伏夜出，飞时像幽灵一样飘忽无声，常常只见黑影一闪，也使对其行为不甚了解的人们产生了种种可怕的联想。

猫头鹰的食物以鼠类为主， 也吃昆虫、小鸟、蜥蜴、鱼等动物。它们都有吐“食丸”的习性，其素囔具有消化能力，食物常常整吞下去，并将食物中不能消化的骨骼、羽毛、毛发、几丁质等残物渣滓集成块状，形成小团经过食道和口腔吐出，叫食丸，也叫唾余。科学家可以根据对食丸的分析，了解它们的食性。
