在此之前，费曼发现自己总是跟贝特唱反调。贝特当时已经是一位知名度较高、很受尊敬的物理学家。当贝特说出一个费曼不同意的观点时，费曼总是公开地强烈地表示反对。经过贝特耐心解释他的推理过程，费曼才能平静下来。可是等到下次观点出现分歧时，这个过程又会重复一遍。贝特一点也不生气，相反，费曼深入的思维给他留下了很好的印象，因此他对费曼产生了一种尊敬。贝特让费曼到自己手下来工作，让他做了计算组的组长。于是费曼成了几位组长当中最年轻的一位。在那个时候，所有的计算都是由人工完成的，要使用对数表和笨重的机械计算器。在费曼的领导下，计算组的工作效率大幅度提高，老科学家们的工作都要依赖这些计算结果，所以他们对费曼的工作非常满意。
